What is an inference?

What is an inference?

You make an inference when you use
clues from the story to figure out
something that the author doesn’t
tell you.

When you make an inference, be
able to identify the clues that you
used.

This week I introduced students to making inferences. We began with a simple activity that I saw on another teacher’s blog from the states.

I brought in a bag which I called my big teacher bag and told the students that they were going to pull things out and infer things about me using the item as clues.

Well let me tell you that when they saw my BIG bag one student stated, “Wow I infer that Ms Con has a big bag because she owns a lot of things!”

And so you see the students are well to their way on making inferences.
